Case study – Central vacuum system with vibrating screen

A chemical products distributor needed to vacuum large quantities of carbon residues of different sizes, ensuring safety, efficiency, and easy handling between various production facilities. This process takes place in an ATEX Zone 22 classified environment, as carbon dust is a potentially combustible material if not properly managed. The customer’s requirement was to have a suction system capable of both collecting the carbon and separating it according to particle size.

The customer’s specific need

The customer requested the design and construction of a mobile suction system that ensures:

  • Operation across multiple sites and quick commissioning, with a large-scale system that is nevertheless easy to move.
  • Modular and flexible structure: three modules that can be configured according to specific needs.
  • Efficient collection of material in Big-Bags and, when required, particle size separation.
  • Maximum safety during the suction of potentially explosive dust in ATEX Zone 22.

The customized Depureco vacuum solution

To meet the project’s requirements, a modular vacuum system was developed, consisting of a PUMA 30 S ATEX 1/3D vacuum unit with a SP cleaning system and three modules that can be combined according to operational needs.

To ensure maximum safety during cleaning operations, the system is designed to operate in ATEX Zone 22 classified environments.

System structure

The vacuumed material can be separated by particle size using a vibrating screen, which allows the carbon to be classified according to particle dimensions, or discharged directly into a single Big-Bag when separation is not required.

Modularity and flexibility of the system

In the system configuration, Module 1 must always be present. Module 2 or Module 3 can then be mounted on top of Module 1, depending on the specific needs.

How does the vibrating screen work?

  • Structure: composed of three sections with metal mesh screens, it allows precise material classification.
  • Operation: during use, the vibrating screen vibrates vigorously; the material coming from the separator passes through the different meshes, being progressively separated and collected into three Big-Bags according to the size of the particles.
  • Flexibility: the screens can be easily replaced to adjust the particle size to the specific requirements of the process.

Modul 1 – Pre-separator Ø 1100

Module 1 consists of a cyclonic separator with a diameter of 1100 mm, equipped with:

  • Rotary level sensor
  • Explosion relief vent
  • Rotary valve continuous discharge system

The frame integrates a tie-rod clamping system that ensures greater stability between the modules. It is also equipped with lifting points with eyebolts and dedicated slots for forklift handling.

Module 2 – Vibrating screen

Module 2 consists of an eccentric-motion vibration motor rated at 2.2 kW and 400 Volts. In the configuration with Module 1 (cyclonic separator) and Module 2 (vibrating screen), the system enables the handling of large volumes and the particle size separation of the material.

  • The vibrating screen features three discharge outlets for distributing the vacuumed material according to particle size; inside, three metal mesh discs are installed, which can be customized based on the desired particle size class.
  • The discharge outlets are equipped with three pairs of foldable arms mounted on the frame, designed to keep the Big-Bags open during filling.
  • The vibrating screen’s frame integrates a metal support grid at the base for tools, along with four adjustable leveling feet that allow proper alignment even on uneven floors.

Module 3 – Frame

Module 3 consists of a frame with leveling feet and is used when the material needs to be discharged without particle size separation (therefore, without the vibrating screen).

  • The frames feature guides that facilitate the alignment and fastening of Module 1, which is then locked in place using pins.
  • Lifting points have been provided using eyebolts to allow forklift access.
