Industrial vacuum solutions for shipyards

For the safe management of dust and chips

In shipyards, the presence of dust, metal shavings, processing residues, and welding fumes requires reliable and high-performance vacuum solutions. The industrial vacuums designed for this context operate in complex conditions, both inside the holds and on open decks, helping to keep work areas clean, reduce health risks for operators, and increase the efficiency of production processes.

Why use an industrial vacuum in shipyards?

In a dynamic and potentially dangerous environment such as shipbuilding, localized and continuous suction allows real-time intervention on critical issues related to processing waste and contaminants present in the air and on surfaces.

The advantages are numerous:

  • Protection of equipment and systems;
  • Greater safety for operators;
  • Compliance with regulations;
  • Optimization of working times.

Below are the main areas of use of industrial vacuums within a shipyard.

Industrial vacuums for welding fumes from sheet metal

In shipbuilding, steel plate is the basic material: it is cut, shaped, and bent according to design, then welded to form the structural elements of the ship, to which piping and electrical systems are integrated. Welding, whether manual or automatic, generates harmful fumes that require dedicated suction. The industrial vacuum XM Torch is the ideal solution: compact and handy, it connects directly to the torch, is operated from the welding machine, and guarantees maximum safety for operators.

Industrial vacuums for the removal of sandblasting grit

After welding, the plates are sandblasted to obtain the correct profiling and prepare them for painting. The metallic abrasives used can be recovered several times before disposal, but they require powerful systems for collection. Three-phase vacuums, such as the Puma and TX series equipped with turbines from 3 to 20 kW, ensure the high vacuum level necessary to collect even the heaviest grit. Combined with separators with conveyed discharge, they allow optimal management of large volumes of material.

The welded steel plate units are then painted, usually with spray guns that use potentially flammable or toxic paints and solvents. In shipbuilding, epoxy coatings are widespread, essential for hulls, superstructures, holds, tanks, and high-traffic decks. During these processes, overspray and hazardous dust are generated: to handle them safely, industrial vacuums equipped with double M+H filtration and Endless Bag collection system are used, which prevents direct contact with the collected particles.

Compressed air vacuums for use without electricity (launching phase)

When the hull is structurally complete and watertight, the ship is launched and enters the outfitting phase: cables, piping, electronic systems, insulation, and furnishings are installed. In this phase, onboard electrical power is not yet available or stable, which is why compressed air vacuums are used. These units represent a safe and effective solution for the removal of dust and residues during outfitting work. Compressed air vacuums are available in different sizes and models, able to adapt to the various operational needs of the shipyard.
