Case study – Vacuuming peat dust and organic compounds

Safely vacuum up even the finest dust

In pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and chemical manufacturing, peat and other organic materials are often used during various production phases. When processed into a fine powder, peat becomes potentially explosive if not managed correctly. This case focuses on the challenge of safely removing fine peat dust spread across three different floors of a pharmaceutical facility. The objective was to implement a continuous vacuum solution that would prevent cross-contamination, protect worker safety, and ensure uninterrupted production processes.

Customer’s need

During the production of activated carbon in a pharmaceutical environment, large quantities of fine, volatile peat dust are released into the air. This dust not only accumulates quickly but also presents a significant explosion risk if not properly controlled. To safeguard personnel, protect equipment, and maintain production integrity, it is essential to extract these airborne residues swiftly and in a completely safe manner.

Depureco’s customized vacuum solution

Depureco developed a tailor-made industrial vacuum solution featuring 12 suction inlets, durable aluminum piping, and a high-efficiency filtering pre-separator. This system is engineered to handle large volumes of fine and volatile peat dust, ensuring safe collection and disposal while providing:

  • Simultaneous dust extraction from different levels of the facility;
  • Extended suction coverage for the entire facility
  • Efficient Dust Collection with Big Bag Discharge

The vacuum system features steel piping installed across all levels of the facility. A total of 12 suction inlets have been strategically positioned to meet the operational needs of the workforce.

  • 1 suction point on the ground floor, to vacuum near the pre-separator
  • 3 suction points on the first floor
  • 3 suction points on the second floor
  • 3 suction points on the third floor
  • 2 suction points on the raised walkway at a height of 35 metres).

The farthest suction point is about 75 metres from the suction unit.

Safe vacuuming in Atex Zone 22

Peat is a carbon-rich organic material with high combustibility. During handling, processing, and transfer phases, it produces fine dust particles that can disperse into the air and form explosive atmospheres. Due to the presence of combustible dust, the working area is classified as ATEX Zone 22. For this reason, the dust extraction system must be safe, highly efficient, and precisely tailored to the complexity of the production environment.

Suction points

Each suction inlet is fitted with electro-pneumatic valves that enable precise control over airflow and system activation.

  • automatically start the system when the suction point is opened;
  • automatically shut down the system approximately 20 seconds after closing.

The system is engineered to support simultaneous operation by two users, ensuring efficiency and uninterrupted workflow.

Suction unit and filter separator

The suction unit is a CVS 150 Atex Z22, with a powerful side-channel blower and a robust steel structure.

  • Power: 15 KW
  • Vacuum in continuous run: 350 mBar
  • Maximum air flow: 920 m³/h

The CVS is equipped with a PLC-controlled electrical panel that enables remote activation of the suction system. Dust is captured in a pre-separator filter unit—the DV AIR 800 Z22—featuring four class M filter cartridges and an SP automatic filter cleaning system. The collected material is discharged into large Big Bags, with the entire process managed autonomously via the control panel.

Integrated safety systems

The suction system includes integrated safety devices designed to maintain continuous performance while protecting the production environment and workers’ health.

Flameless Vent2

An ATEX-certified flameless vent integrated into the system allows rapid depressurisation in the event of a peat dust explosion, preventing structural collapse.

An ATEX-certified compartmentalisation valve is built into the piping system to block the backflow of vacuumed peat dust and stop the spread of explosions throughout the plant infrastructure.
