Brushless vs By-pass: choose the most suitable motor based on your application!

When choosing an industrial vacuum, motor technology plays a key role in determining the machine’s performance, durability, and efficiency.

Two of the most common solutions used in single-phase industrial vacuums are brushless motors and bypass motors. Although they may seem similar at first glance, they are actually designed for very different applications and operating conditions.

To select the most suitable solution for your needs, it is important to understand the main differences between these two technologies in terms of:

  • Motor operating mode
  • Maintenance level and lifespan
  • Ideal applications and usage contexts

How do they differ?

By-pass motors are compact and powerful, making them the ideal solution for industrial cleaning operations and intermittent duty cycles. Inside the motor, two carbon brushes rub against the rotor to set it in motion, generating friction and small sparks. For this reason, they are not designed for use in ATEX zones.

Brushless literally means “without carbon brushes.” Since there are no brushes rubbing against the rotor, friction and sparks are eliminated. The motor is electronically controlled by a board that manages its operation without mechanical contact, ensuring spark-free operation and eliminating potential ignition sources.

Brushless Motors: the safest solution for ATEX zones

Brushless motors are the only type of single-phase motor we recommend for use in ATEX zones, regardless of the machine’s level of protection.

Thanks to their spark-free operation, brushless motors significantly reduce the risk of ignition and ensure greater reliability in hazardous environments.
