Industrial vacuum cleaners for weapons and ammunition manufacturing

The production of arms and ammunition involves high-precision engineering and metalworking, combining CNC machining of high-strength metals and high-performance polymers, heat treatments, welding, and assembly, under some of the strictest safety standards in the industry.

Each stage generates different residues:

  • metal chips and cutting fluids (neat oils and emulsions) from machining operations
  • combustible metal dusts
  • toxic lead dusts
  • welding fumes

A standard industrial vacuum is not suitable for all these applications: each requires a specific filtration class, certification, and collection system.

The benefits of industrial vacuum systems in the arms and ammunition sector

Using dedicated industrial vacuum cleaners in an arms and ammunition production line makes it possible to:

  • reduce operator exposure to toxic dust and fumes, extracting contaminants at the source before they disperse into the environment;
  • limit the accumulation of combustible dust on surfaces, machinery, and structures — a key contributor to secondary explosions;
  • keep production areas clean and maintain dimensional accuracy in machining;
  • recover cutting fluid by separating it from metal chips, delivering direct process cost savings;
  • reduce machine downtime associated with cleaning and maintenance operations.

Below are the main application areas for vacuum cleaners within this industrial sector.

Oil and swarf vacuum cleaners for precision machining

The production of arms and ammunition requires extensive high-precision machining operations — turning, milling, and grinding of barrels, bolts, and precision components — which generate metal chips and cutting fluid residues. Their prompt removal is crucial to maintaining quality standards, reducing machine downtime, and preserving equipment efficiency.

Depureco’s line of industrial oil and swarf vacuum cleaners, such as the M 130 OIL, allows you to separate solids from liquids, recover cutting oil, and simplify sump maintenance, helping keep production areas clean while reducing process costs.

The material being machined matters. If machining involves light alloys — aluminum, titanium, magnesium — the fine residue generated is not ordinary swarf: it is a combustible metal dust and must be handled with an ACD, ATEX, or inerting system vacuum cleaner. See the relevant sections below.

Class H vacuum cleaners for lead and other toxic dusts

In ammunition manufacturing and testing facilities, lead is a critical contaminant. This is not a matter of reactivity, but of toxicity: lead dust is classified as a substance toxic for reproduction, and handling it is subject to strict occupational health and safety regulations.

The regulatory framework has also become more stringent. Directive (EU) 2024/869 lowered the occupational exposure limit value for lead and its inorganic compounds to 0.03 mg/m³ over eight hours, down from the previous 0.15 mg/m³, and revised biological limit values downwards, with a transitional period for blood lead levels.

For this type of dust, an appropriate solution is a Class H industrial vacuum cleaner, equipped with a HEPA H14 absolute filter and a safe-containment disposal system, ensuring the operator does not come into contact with the material during emptying. The XFLOOR 3 H and XFLOOR 3 PLUS H ranges are designed specifically for vacuuming fine and toxic Class H dusts.

Inerting systems for reactive metal dust

Certain processes in this industry generate fine, reactive, and conductive metal dust — aluminium, titanium, magnesium, light alloys from machining or additive manufacturing. For these materials, filtration alone is not enough: the risk is ignition inside the collection container.

Depureco’s inerting vacuum solutions, such as Ecobull DEX 1/2D INERT, submerge the collected material in an inert liquid, reducing the risk associated with collecting reactive dust. The model is certified with II 1/2D Ex h IIIC T160 Da/Db marking, is equipped with an H13 filter with antistatic filter media, and is equipped with a spark arrester and hydrogen vent valve.

For conductive dust, always check that the entire system, including hoses and accessories, is properly grounded.

ATEX vacuum cleaners for combustible dust

In production areas where combustible dust can form a potentially explosive atmosphere, the choice of vacuum cleaner depends on the zone classification, not on the industry sector.

  • Outside classified ATEX zones, with non-airborne combustible dust → ACD-type vacuum cleaner (Appliance for Combustible Dust).
  • In Zone 22, where an explosive dust atmosphere may occur occasionally → certified ATEX category 1/3D or 1/2D vacuum cleaner.
  • In Zone 21, where its presence is likely → certified ATEX category 1/2D vacuum cleaner.

The Depureco ATEX industrial vacuum cleaner range is certified by a third-party body. Category ACD appliances are not ATEX certified: they are designed for the safe collection of combustible dust outside classified zones. This is an important distinction to clarify during technical specification, as it determines where the machine can physically be located.

Explosives, propellants, and primers: outside the scope of ATEX

ATEX certification applies to combustible process dust; it does not cover areas where propellants, primers and explosives are formulated, loaded or handled. The latter fall under a distinct regulatory framework and require a case-by-case assessment, carried out together with the plant’s safety manager.

Welding fume extractors for assembly operations

During the assembly of metal components, welding operations generate fumes and fine particulate matter that must be captured directly at the source, before they reach the operator’s breathing zone or settle.
XM TORCH extracts fumes directly from the welding torch, featuring a Class M filter on PTFE-coated polyester media and a Jet Clean filter cleaning system that maintains its efficiency over time.

Single-phase vacuum cleaners for cleaning and maintenance

In component and ammunition assembly lines, machining residues and dust accumulate over time, reducing efficiency and increasing maintenance needs. For routine workstation cleaning, Depureco single-phase industrial vacuum cleaners offer easy handling and straightforward operation for routine cleaning and maintenance.

However, two conditions apply: they must be used outside classified areas and only on non-combustible, non-toxic residues.

Weapons and ammunition: why use a vacuum cleaner in these production environments?

Why is it important to use industrial vacuum cleaners during weapons and ammunition manufacturing? In such a context, where risks to operators and the environment are high and strict precision standards are required, vacuum cleaners help protect workers and help maintain precision.

To maximize safety and continuity, the Depureco range offers:

  • Third-party certified ATEX vacuum cleaners;
  • Vacuum cleaners with dust inerting systems;
  • Versatile single-phase vacuum cleaners for general cleaning;
  • Vacuum cleaners for welding torches.
