Case Study – Straw and Lime Vacuum System

A company specializing in the production of bedding for farm animals needed to remove straw, plant fibers, and lime dust.
The bedding production process takes place in several warehouses, where a significant amount of lime dust and fine straw fibers is generated. These residues must be effectively extracted to maintain a clean and healthy work environment, protecting both workers and equipment.

The customer’s need

The customer requested the design and installation of a ventilation system capable of:

  • being easily moved between production areas.
  • vacuuming large amounts of fine lime dust mixed with fine straw fibers;
  • effectively filtering the finest lime particles and vegetable fibers.
  • being used both as a mobile solution via flexible hoses and as an integrated solution within a fixed piping network.

Livestock bedding production: the manufacturing process

At the livestock bedding production site, several buildings are dedicated to processing large volumes of straw. In the first building, the straw is finely shredded and, during this phase, material residues accumulate around the equipment and in walkways, requiring regular vacuuming.

Storage and mixing

Subsequently, the shredded straw is transferred to a second, larger building, where it is stored in dedicated hoppers and then loaded by front loaders into mixing units, where lime is added.

Although the mixers and conveyor belts are equipped with dedicated extraction systems, a significant amount of fine lime dust and straw fibers is still generated within the building and must be removed.

A customized vacuum system was implemented to effectively clean the production buildings, consisting of a three-phase Puma 15 P industrial vacuum and a tiltable cyclone pre-separator. In this configuration, the coarser straw residues are collected in the pre-separator, while the Puma 15 P efficiently handles the finest lime dust thanks to its dual-stage filtration system.

The system is designed to be easily moved between different work areas. For this reason, a dedicated transport frame has been developed, allowing the entire system to be handled with a forklift and relocated between the various buildings of the production site.

One system, dual configuration

The vacuum system can be configured in two modes, designed to flexibly adapt to different operational and production requirements: a mobile configuration and a fixed configuration.

Mobile solution: the PUMA 15 vacuum unit and the pre-separator can be connected via flexible hoses, ensuring high operational flexibility and allowing the operator to easily intervene across different work areas by vacuuming material directly where needed.

Fixed system: the system can also be configured as a fixed installation by connecting it to a piping network, allowing straw to be extracted simultaneously from two intake points and ensuring continuous and efficient operation within the building.

The extracted material is conveyed into the pre-separator, where the coarser residues are intercepted and collected. The airflow then continues towards the industrial vacuum unit, which also handles the finest dust thanks to its dual-stage filtration system.
